Universal credit needs our backing now more than ever
Universal credit has been no stranger to bad press. Major concerns about the system have existed since its inception, returning this week when it was revealed that almost a million people have applied for the benefit in the wake of COVID-19 crisis.
But whilst it is right that we continue to put universal credit under the spotlight as it faces new challenges, it does not deserve to come under fire. Universal credit has been hailed by many as a calamity – a system worthy of banishing to the history books, or (more recently) replacing with the far less effective universal basic income. But it’s time we acknowledge that the reality of universal credit fails to live up to its chaotic caricature.
